What is sound healing and what happens to your body when you experience it?.

Written by Mar for Aum Yoga Lab

Perhaps you left a session feeling different — lighter, calmer, with something resolved that you didn't know was tense — but without being able to explain exactly what happened.

That's no coincidence. And it's not magic either.

It's physics.

Your body doesn't just "hear" a sound. It's feeling a vibration.

Sound healing is an ancient practice that uses instruments such as Tibetan singing bowls, gongs, tuning forks, and singing to create specific frequencies that act directly on the body.

But here's what many people don't know: sound doesn't reach you only through your ears.

Sounds travel through space and air, reaching your body through receptors in your skin, then your fascia, fluids, and tissues. We are a large concentration of water—around 70%—and water conducts vibration extraordinarily well. This movement within the body is literal, physical, and measurable.

It's not a metaphor. It's biology.

What happens in your nervous system

Before your thoughts can process what's happening, your nervous system has already responded.

The gentle, sustained frequencies of Tibetan singing bowls activate the vagus nerve—that great regulator of the autonomic nervous system—sending a signal of safety throughout the body. The result is tangible: breathing deepens, the heart rate slows, and muscles release accumulated tension.

We enter a state of activation of the parasympathetic nervous system. The same state that the body needs to rest, process, heal, and regenerate.

And the best part: you don't need to induce this state with your mind. Your body responds naturally to the frequencies. You just have to be there.

Your brain waves change

We spend most of the day in beta waves—the state of analysis, concentration, problem-solving, mental lists, and worries. That constant state of alertness that many already feel is their "normal mode.".

When stable, repetitive frequencies are created, the brain begins to shift towards alpha and theta waves. These are the same waves associated with deep meditation, creative states, emotional processing, and restorative sleep.

You might feel something strange during a session: a new discomfort, images, emotions that appear for no apparent reason, or simply deep drowsiness. That's normal. Your brain is operating at a different frequency than usual. It's in unfamiliar territory.

Allow yourself to be there.

Cymatics: sound organizes matter

There's a branch of physics called cymatics that studies how sound creates and organizes shapes in matter. When you apply specific frequencies to sand or water, perfect geometric patterns emerge. The shape depends on the frequency.

Now imagine that happening inside you.

We are 70% water, an element highly sensitive to sound. When the frequencies of Tibetan singing bowls come into contact with this medium, the vibrations organize themselves at a cellular and molecular level. This is one of the effects that has given this practice the name "healing": the ability to stimulate cellular renewal and reorganization.

What might you feel during a session?

Every experience is different, and that's also part of the practice.

Some people feel a warmth spreading through their body. Others experience a tingling sensation, a gentle pressure in their chest, or simply a peace they haven't felt in a long time. Some cry without knowing why. Some fall asleep.

Your body experiences it physiologically long before your thoughts do, which is why it's often difficult to explain. You don't need to understand what's happening for your body to respond.

Have you ever left a session unable to explain exactly what happened to you, but feeling profoundly different?

That's sound healing doing its job.

Who is this practice for?

For anyone who wants to pause. Whose nervous system is exhausted from so much stimulation. Who feels that words are no longer enough to process what they're carrying. Who simply wants to truly rest.

You don't need any prior experience. You don't need to know how to meditate. You don't need to believe in anything in particular.

All you need to do is arrive, lie down, and let the sound do what it does best.
